Deaf Cricket Says Farewell to one if its Own

Jeffrey Kan was a proud Deaf man, England Deaf international cricketer, Middlesex player, devoted father and valued member of Britain’s Deaf community. Educated at Woodford School for the Deaf and St John’s Catholic School at Boston Spa, Jeffrey belonged to a generation that helped shape modern Deaf sport in Britain.

He represented England Deaf Cricket during the pioneering years of international Deaf cricket, including the inaugural Deaf Cricket World Cup in Australia in 1995–96. He also participated in the intense, five-week tour to Australia for the 2004 Deaf Ashes. Among his major contributions to English cricket was a legendary performance where he batted nearly all day alongside Ben Young. Their long, resilient first-wicket stand wore down the Australian bowlers and fielders, showcasing the grit and determination Jeffrey brought to the game. A classy left handed batsman with a trademark front drive and a lazy pull shot straight over mid-wicket.

Beyond the cricket field, Jeffrey was known for his warmth, humour and positivity. A familiar face within Deaf clubs and sporting circles, he maintained lifelong friendships across the Deaf community and took great pride in preserving the history of England Deaf Cricket for future generations. He will be remembered not only for his contribution to the game, but for the kindness and friendship he showed to so many people throughout his life.
