Surrey Deaf start League season with win

May 18, 2015

Surrey Deaf County Cricket squad finally commenced their season with a victory, having had the first match cancelled due to a lack of opposition players.

Winning the toss captain Mike O'Mahony put Twickenham into bat and they were soon in trouble thanks to a lively opening spell from brothers Farooq Mohammed  and Mohammed Rashid.

Farooq removed the openers quickly and by the time Rashid had got in on the act Twickenham were 29-4 and struggling.

Things were about to get much worse for the home team.  O'Mahony pulled out the first hat-trick of his long career and picked up one further wicket to reduce Twickenham to 46-8.

Unfortunately the last two wickets proved somewhat more difficult to take and somehow they managed to get the score up to 139 before Daniel Webster finished off the innings.  Credit to Gul who scored 51 in the middle order to hold the innings together enough to get a competitive score.

England captain Umesh Valjee opened the innings with O'Mahony and after a slow start the runs soon started to flow.

The put on 128 for the first wicket before O'Mahony was bowled for 62 off 63 balls to go with his 8-4-11-4.

Valjee and young Sarvesh Thiruchelvam saw the team home with the former ending 70 not out off 75 balls.

Congratulations to the team who are now top of the league.
