ECAD Lions Trial Match - Report

The inaugural England Cricket Association for the Deaf (ECAD) Lions trial match took place on Bank Holiday Monday at the delightful Horley CC just outside Banbury in North Oxfordshire.

24 prospective players were battling it out for 15 summer squad places in a 50 overs match.

The Possibles, led by Niteshk Chavda, won the toss and inserted Oli Aspinall’s Potentials team and were soon rewarded with an early wicket when Nathan Caddell was caught off opening bowling Jamie Sorbie.

But this was their last success for a while as opener Saul Allison and home town boy Mike Kelly put on 104 for the second wicket until Kelly, who had played a number of big shots, was caught of 13 year old Chris Flynn’s first delivery for 33.

Flynn followed up this triumph with a further wicket, captain Aspinall for nought after Allison had retired on 50, leaving the Potentials 119-3.

Joel Harris cleaned up Simon Lycett for 3 and after Henry Wainman (37 from 28 balls) and Sarvesh Thiruchelvam put on 37 for the 5th wicket, the innings collapsed with Chadva cleaning up the tail with his leg spin and the Potentials were all out for 189 with just over 4 overs left to bowl.

An excellent fielding performance, despite a few catches going down, backed up a fiery opening spell from Aqib Javed and bags of promise from youngsters Flynn, Nathan Secombe and Luke Riley.

In reply the Possibles lost Jake Oakes early in the proceedings to an excellent slip catch by Allison off Wainman but James Foster and Chadva added 70 for the second wicket before Foster was bowled by Aaron Young, another one of the very exciting youngsters on show. Stalwart Mike O’Mahony joined Chavda and, after the latter had retired on 50, even the early loss of Joel Harris to leg spinner John Kenward couldn’t halt the chase as the Possibles bounded home to victory.

It took Liam Savage (29) and Martin Henderson (26) to see them home with 14 overs to spare.

An excellent afternoon’s cricket has left the ECAD Lions selectors with plenty to consider.

The squad is due to be announced early next week.
