The DICC have invited ECAD and other national Deaf cricket organisations to compete in the World Cup 2026.

This will take place in the UAE from 24th - 31st October 2026

The format of the competition is

50 over matches
6 competing teams
3 group matches per team, followed by knock-out stages

The DICC T20 World Cup UAE attracted over 500,000 live-stream viewers, and interest is expected to increase significantly for the 2026 World Cup.

England Deaf Cricket is Looking for a new Chairperson.

With Katie Harrison stepping down from the role as Chair of ECAD, the Board of Directors is now seeking a new leader to guide the organisation through one of the most important periods in its history.

Cricket for Deaf people in England is changing fast. With major shifts taking place within the ECB’s disability cricket structures, ECAD is determined to ensure that the voice of Deaf players, coaches, and volunteers remains strong, respected, and heard at every level.

We are seeking a strategic, inclusive, and steady leader who can help ECAD navigate these changes while protecting what matters most — Deaf leadership, Deaf culture, and fair access to cricket.

The Chair will lead a committed Board of volunteers, helping to strengthen governance, secure long-term sustainability, and represent ECAD’s values in national conversations about inclusion in sport. This is a chance to make a lasting difference to how Deaf people participate and lead in cricket across England.

Who we’re looking for

We welcome applications from Deaf and hearing candidates who can bring strong governance experience, sound judgement, and a real understanding of Deaf people’s issues in sport and society. Whether that knowledge comes from lived experience or professional engagement, what matters is the ability to lead with empathy, confidence, and authenticity.

We’re particularly interested in candidates who:

Have leadership or governance experience in sport, voluntary, or community settings
Understand the challenges faced by Deaf athletes and are committed to Deaf-led inclusion
Can represent ECAD credibly with the ECB, funders, and other partners
Have a collaborative, diplomatic style and the ability to unite people behind shared goals

ECAD is looking for sponsors, here's a note from our Secretary Dave.

Our new Secretary to the Board, Dave Farebrother, comes to ECAD with a wealth of experience in sports administration. Dave took over as secretary in January this year but has more than fifty years of experience of running football clubs, from Sunday league up to to the Football League. Dave was Chairman of the Board at Sutton United when they won promotion into the Football League, but although he has now retired as a Director after twenty five years on the board he still enjoys a number of less demanding voluntary roles. He has also spent more than thirty years in cricket administration and is currently fixture secretary for his local team.

Dave recently sponsored one of Sutton United's Academy players and explains here why he chose do so in the name of ECAD:-

"Although my wife has no hearing in one ear, until I took on the secretarial role with ECAD I was blissfully unaware of the difficulties faced by deaf cricketers, not only during games but also the logistics around travel and coaching and the differences between deaf and pan-disability cricket that can sometimes make it difficult for deaf players to find suitable opportunities. Of course, ECAD exists to promote cricket to new players and to support established players but receives no direct funding. When the opportunity arose to sponsor one of Sutton United's young stars of the future it occured to me that this might be a small opportunity to promote the ECAD name more widely, so young defender Dan Urpens is sponsored "on behalf of the England Cricket Association for the Deaf". I am not expecting this to lead to a sudden flood of interested parties wanting to support ECAD, but if just one person or organisation comes forward to sponsor ECAD, it would be amazing."

Chris Harrison Returns to the Crease for 2025 Transplant Cricket Ashes

This June, cricket fans across the UK are invited to celebrate a truly special sporting moment—one that shines a light not only on cricketing talent but on courage, resilience, and the transformative power of organ donation.

Among the squad taking part in the England and Wales Transplant Cricket Ashes Series 2025 is none other than Chris Harrison , a proud Deaf cricketer whose story continues to inspire. Chris has spent most of his life living with just one kidney. But a couple of years ago, his life changed forever when his wife, Katie, became part of a kidney donation chain. She selflessly donated her kidney to help someone else, and in return, Chris received a healthy new kidney from another donor—an act of generosity that gave him a fresh lease on life, and a return to the game he loves.

Now, Chris is representing England once again, this time in the 2025 Transplant Ashes—a powerful series that celebrates the lives and second chances made possible by organ, stem cell, tissue, and bone marrow donation.

The series will see England and Wales Transplant Cricket face off against Australia’s Lucky Stars Transplant Cricket team in three matches:

Deaf Cricketers Raise Concerns Over ECB’s Pan-Disability Cricket Reforms

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is under fire after its decision to merge England’s elite disability cricket teams into a single pan-disability squad. While the ECB has framed this as a progressive move towards inclusion and global leadership, deaf cricketers and other stakeholders are warning that it may actually reduce opportunities and make the sport less accessible.

The Guardian’s exclusive report reveals that two deaf players have already quit in protest over the lack of consultation and concerns that the changes will sideline players from the Deaf and Learning Disability squads in favour of those with physical disabilities. One unnamed Deaf England player stated:

“Deaf cricket enables us all to play our best cricket, because it removes all of the deafness out of it. Pan-disability cricket highlights it, makes it a difference. We’ve hammered home so many different accessibility problems with the DPL, and the ECB haven’t done anything about it.”

Communication remains a major concern, particularly for deaf players. Though the ECB has introduced some sign language training, the same player criticised it as tokenistic:

“It reduces BSL [British Sign Language], a rich language, into a tick-box exercise. You wouldn’t say, ‘a French player has joined us but it’s OK because we’ve all learned how to say bonjour’.”

Dr Ben Powis, a senior lecturer at Bournemouth University and lead author of a new academic study on disability cricket, echoed those concerns. His research found that the Disability Premier League represents a “contrived lumping of athletes together” and that:

“Streamlining these squads means that there will be players with certain impairments who will now be frozen out of international cricket. The ECB have created a system for people to fail in.”

Critics argue that rather than advancing the sport, the ECB’s new model may actually reflect outdated power structures. As one England Deaf player put it:

“It’s colonial, in a way… Deaf cricket is thriving internationally, and it’s the ECB that is falling behind once again.”

While the ECB insists that the new structure will inspire growth and eventually lead to a Disability World Cup, many players remain unconvinced—especially as no other cricketing nation currently operates a pan-disability format.

This is a debate not just about cricket, but about what genuine inclusion looks like in sport. As more voices speak out, the ECB faces growing pressure to reconsider whether one-size-fits-all really fits anyone.

A Heart-breaking Decision That Shakes the Deaf Sporting Community

On January 31st, 2025, members of Deaf Cricket Australia (DCA) gathered at Melbourne Deaf Cricket Club and online for a historic but deeply emotional meeting. What should have been a celebration of 130 years of Deaf cricket in Australia turned into a painful farewell as the organization announced its closure.

Two Big Ears was able to look in and ask questions to the livestreamed session, thanks to Expression Australia for setting up the technical arrangements.

The decision was not made lightly. DCA representatives Melissa Hale, Justin Bergen, and James Hale stood before a devastated audience and explained the irreversible breakdown in negotiations with Cricket Australia (CA). The raw emotion in the room was unmistakable. As they spoke, their heartbreak was visible to everyone —they fought to hold their composure, but it was clear how much this loss meant to them.

Cricket Australia’s Grip on Deaf Cricket

In recent years, Deaf Cricket Australia had to adapt to the structures set by Cricket Australia, which controls the National Cricket Inclusion Championships (NCIC) and the Australian Deaf Cricket Team .

The problem? Cricket Australia had full control.

Under its agreements, DCA:

Lost its autonomy to run independent competitions or seek its own sponsorships.
Was denied the right to form an Australian Deaf Women’s Cricket Team, despite other countries like India, Sri Lanka, and England already having theirs.
Had no say in decisions affecting Deaf cricket at a national level.

Melissa Hale made it clear:

“We knew from 130 years of history how Deaf cricket works. Cricket Australia just did not agree.”

With most hard-of-hearing players growing up in the hearing world, DCA’s biggest fear was that, without Deaf leadership, the future of the sport would become just another hearing-dominated system , stripping it of the cultural and community values that made it unique.

A Decision Five Years in the Making

For over five years , Deaf Cricket Australia pushed for greater Deaf leadership, Deaf mentors, and a structure that protected Deaf culture within the sport .

But the barriers were impossible to break. Cricket Australia repeatedly denied requests for a Deaf Women’s team , offered no explanation , and blocked attempts to secure independent sponsorship due to corporate agreements.

Faced with no alternative, DCA made the painful decision to cease operations and seal its history . The name, logo, and trophies—including the prestigious Webby Cup and Abraham Shield —will now be preserved as historical artifacts.

A Tearful Goodbye: Holding Composure in the Face of Heartbreak

The most gut-wrenching moment of the night came when Melissa Hale, Justin Bergen, and James Hale gave their final remarks.

Each one fought back tears as they addressed the audience. Their voices wavered, and their hands trembled as they signed, trying not to break down. The weight of their words was heavy , and everyone in the room could feel their pain.

Justin Bergen, who has been part of Deaf Cricket Australia since 1994 , shared how difficult it was to explain this decision to DCA life members like John Webb OAM, Kevin Smith, and Tony Clues .

“It’s been part of my life for 30 years. This was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.”

James Hale described the internal battles and sleepless nights that went into this decision, recalling a painful meeting with state representatives in March 2024 , where it became clear that

DCA could no longer continue .

Melissa Hale, visibly struggling to keep her emotions in check, admitted:

“I feel like I’ve ripped the heart out of the Deaf community today. I feel sick and have done all week, knowing I’d have to face you and tell you this.”

As they spoke, the room was silent . Many in the audience had tears in their eyes. The heartbreak was not just theirs—it belonged to the entire Deaf cricketing community.

What Happens Now?

With DCA gone, the NCIC will continue under Cricket Australia’s control , but with no Deaf leadership . This raises urgent concerns:

Without Deaf mentors , how will new Deaf players be welcomed into the sport?
Will Deaf culture and identity be respected in a hearing-dominated system?
Can Deaf Sports Australia (DSA) step in and ensure that Deaf cricket doesn’t disappear entirely?

Phil Harper from Deaf Sports Australia acknowledged these challenges but admitted that DSA oversees 16 different sports and cannot take over grassroots Deaf cricket development .

A Loss Felt Across Generations

The closure of Deaf Cricket Australia is more than just a sporting decision —it is a cultural loss for the Deaf community.

For 130 years , Deaf cricket was not just a game; it was a place of belonging , a space where Deaf people could connect through their language, identity, and shared experiences .

Now, that space is gone.

A Call to Action

The future of Deaf cricket now lies in the hands of the players and the community . While Cricket Australia will continue running its teams, the question remains:
Will Deaf players accept this new system, or will they fight to keep their culture alive?

If the community wants change, now is the time to step forward , contact Deaf Sports Australia , and push for a system that respects Deaf identity and leadership .

For now, Deaf Cricket Australia is gone . But the spirit of its players, past and present, will never be forgotten .

"Dan Bowser also won the Disability Premier League with Pirates and represented England Learning Disability this season. Dan is England Learning Disability all-time leading run-scorer and was named Disability Cricketer of the Year in 2020."

"Stephen George was also part of the Pirates side that won the DPL and also represented England Deaf against India. He was named England Disability Cricketer of the Year in 2024."

"Whilst no longer playing in Devon, Mark Woodman was a popular figure during his time in the county. Mark represented Devon for nine seasons, represented England Deaf in two Ashes series and formed part of the all-conquering Exmouth CC side that won six successive premier Division titles in the 1990s. This is a volunteering role and you will be asked to attend some Committee meetings now and then to discuss ideas and projects.

Course for deaf people and BSL interpreters to gain entry level for coaching cricket in England & Wales

The Warwickshire Cricket Foundation and ECAD have teamed up to provide the ECB Foundation Coach 1 course that is accessible for deaf people.

We are also partnering with Deaf World and ECAD Midlands who will be an important local partner in the workforce development programme which we plan to establish from this training, so that deaf people can work with deaf players in the Deaf cricket network and those who are in the mainstream programmes.

The training is also open to BSL interpreters who wish to develop their understanding of cricket coaching and develop the correct BSL cricket terminology so that they can be deployed in the ECB Disability cricket framework.

This training will be a mixture of e-learning and face-to-face training, both parts are made accessible for learners whose first language is BSL.

Everyone will explore what coaching looks like, your impact as a Foundation Coach and the skills you can help players to develop and how you can learn from your experience.

Surrey Triumphs over Middlesex in Pan-disability match

In a spirited and inclusive cricket match, the Surrey Pan-Disability team emerged victorious against Middlesex by a margin of 70 runs. This match, featuring players who are deaf, physically disabled, and those with learning disabilities, was more than just a contest; it was a celebration of camaraderie and the enduring friendships within the cricketing community.

Surrey, donning their light-coloured kits, put up a solid batting performance. Middlesex captain Simon Lycett led from the front, scoring a steady 24 runs off 48 balls to keep his side in the game. Saul Allison provided a late boost with an impressive 9 not out from just 5 balls, ensuring Surrey set a challenging target. Neil Magdani contributed 10 runs off 35 balls, while Mozzam Rashid, despite being bowled out for a duck after facing 8 balls, shone in his bowling role later in the match.

Middlesex struggled to chase down Surrey's total, with Rashid's bowling proving particularly effective. Rashid claimed 2 crucial wickets, stifling Middlesex's momentum and helping to secure the victory for Surrey.

The match was marked by joyous reunions and heartfelt exchanges among players. The photo capturing the moment featured Jason Taylor, Mozzam Rashid, Saul Allison, Neil Magdani, and Simon Lycett, all of whom shared smiles and laughter, epitomizing the spirit of the event.

Through this collaboration, Deaf fans can now easily obtain tickets for upcoming matches or discuss membership packages using our video relay service (VRS), ensuring seamless communication with MCC, just like their hearing counterparts.

Additionally, staff and stewards at Lord's Cricket Ground will be equipped to communicate directly with Deaf individuals via an on-demand video BSL interpreter available on mobile or tablet devices.

Stuart Dunlop, Sustainability and Accessibility Manager at MCC, stated, "We are very pleased to become the first cricket venue to partner with SignVideo, whose service will make it easier for members of the BSL community to communicate with the Club’s staff. We hope this partnership will open up the experience of Lord’s to those who previously may not have considered visiting."

Pitch not suitable for play - match cancelled

We have just been informed by the HAC that our match has to be cancelled because the ground staff have been unable to get the pitch ready due to the very poor weather we have had this year.

This is unfortunate but unavoidable.

That match was due to take place on 27 ^th April at 12pm Noon so hopefully a new date in the future will be found.

England Deaf to Host T20 Series v India this Summer

Seven match series planned for the summer!

There will be a SEVEN match series beginning on June 18 at the County Ground, Derby and then it moves around the country, finishing in Leicestershire on June 27.

All matches will be live-streamed on the ECB website and YouTube channel.

England's Captain George Greenway is gearing up for his first home series as captain "It's such an honour to lead this team and we're ready to go against India. It will be a hugely competitive series for both nations."

England Visually Impaired team will also be hosting India VI at the same time.

Deaf players are invited to be selected for match against HAC

A select team of players from the ECAD membership will be playing their annual fixture against the HAC (Honourable Artillery Company) Cricket Club

ECAD will select the ECAD players in March 2024 and the ECAD manager will contact the players to see their availability to play. If you are a member of ECAD and wish to play, you can also contact Simon Lycett simonlycett@hotmail.com who will put you on the list for consideration.

Spectators are very welcome to watch the match but you will need to inform Simon Lycett via email simonlycett@hotmail.com - no later than one week before 27th April because we must provide a list of names at the security barrier. They will check the names before they can entry the ground.

2024 Season plans for Women & Girls' Cricket

Moving ahead into the 2024 season, we are excited to offer an expanded programme, which will start with two weekend winter training camps . Both camps will take place at the Indoor School at Edgbaston stadium, Birmingham . The first camp was held on Saturday 3 ^rd and Sunday 4 ^th February , the second will take place on the 2 ^nd and 3 ^rd March.

Following those camps, we are working on holding three match days in 2024. One will be at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough. That is likely to take place on Saturday 24 ^th August.

In addition, we are very keen to keep increasing the group of players that we have. Our intention is that once the group is sufficient in size, we will look to create two ‘Franchised’ squads that will form the start of a Women’s Disability Premier League. This very exciting departure and one that I know is gaining some good traction internally at ECB. Once we achieve this, we will truly all be part of a ground-breaking, first of its kind (as far as we are aware), anywhere in the cricketing world, pan disability cricket competition for women.

Disability County Competitions for 2024

Increase in number of ECB Disability County Cricket Competitions for 2024

The ECB Disability Cricket Annual Conference was held on 13th January 2024 at Edgbaston Birmingham. The highlights from this for deaf and hard of hearing players is shared below.

In domestic cricket, there are two Pan-Disability leagues that provide competitive opportunities for cricketers with physical disabilities, learning disabilities or hearing impairments (Super9’s and D40). For more information click on the links below.

There will be 82 D40 fixtures and 62 Super 9's Regional Fixtures 20 teams have been registered for the D40 or S9

Players who are currently registered with a county team will be able to transfer to another country team - but only in the close season (October - April)

Players will not be allowed to transfer if this involves travelling through another county that already has a D40 team in place.

ECB Effective Communication Workshops

Learn how to communicate effectively with Deaf and Hard of Hearing cricketers

Last November, one of our committee members, Stuart Harrison delivered a workshop to help ECB staff, coaches and volunteers to discover and use more effective ways of communicating with Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) people in the cricket environment.

The workshop lasts 3 hours and is full of practical activities to enable people to use their non-verbal communication skills when engaging with DHH players.

Participants came from across the country and the workshop was delivered in :

Stoke on Trent

As this was the first edition of this course, we worked with those who already work in the County Disability Cricket pathway and this is now open to all mainstream cricket organisations who wish to develop those essential skills.

Say Hello to Charlotte our new Safeguarding Lead

We are delighted to welcome Charlotte Hammond to England Cricket Association for the Deaf who has joined our team as our new Safeguarding Lead.

Charlotte's focus will be to ensure that deaf people are supported to access sport in a safe environment and support coaches and volunteers to do this in a way that empowers deaf cricketers.

Charlotte has a strong background in various sectors of safeguarding. Her first degree was in Law and Criminology and Her Masters degree was Advanced Child Protection with a specific focus on Safeguarding and Sexual Abuse in Sport.

She has worked in safeguarding roles in education and residential care and now works in the Safeguarding team at Swim England. She has a significant background in sports personally too. We are delighted that she has chosen to volunteer with us at ECAD and enable us to benefit from her experience and skills.

Charlotte spoke about her new volunteering role "I am delighted to have been appointed to volunteer with ECAD. Serving the sports community is right at the heart of my employed role at Swim England, through the outreach and charity work I do. As a volunteer Designated Safeguarding Lead at ECAD, I will predominantly be on hand to support the organisation in any safeguarding related matters. Working with deaf people to provide them with safe sporting opportunities is a huge passion and I am looking forward to supporting ECAD in order to achieve their community goals.”

Yorkshire take the spoils as the Deaf Roses match returns

After a twenty five year gap, a Deaf ‘Roses’ cricket match was played out on Bank Holiday Monday, May 31st, with Deaf spectators attending from both counties.

Yorkshire hosted the game, courtesy of Addingham CC, and won the match by 5 wickets.

Lancashire made 129 for 7 from their 40 allotted overs and Yorkshire passed that in the 24th over scoring 130 for 5.

Henry Wainman of Bardsey CC, played a true captain’s innings, making an unbeaten 67 to take the Yorkshire side to victory. Hashim Mahmood, a member of the Barnsley AFC Academy but not attached to a cricket club, took 2 wickets for Yorkshire and made a vital overhead catch to dismiss the leading Lancashire all-rounder and captain, Jimmy Dixon. Wainman and Dixon have both played for the England Deaf side.

Coach Chris Schofield, who played for the England Under 19s from 1993 to 1995 and made one appearance for Yorkshire CCC in 1996, kept wicket for Yorkshire. But both sides were a mixture of experienced and inexperienced cricketers.

The first Deaf ‘Roses’ fixture was staged in 1924 but the last one was in 1996. Now that this match has been revived, the aim is to play it every year on a home and away basis. The trophy, a cricket bat complete with a list of previous winners, was recovered from down south and brought up to Addingham for the occasion.

Most Deaf representative cricket is now played on a regional basis and the leading Yorkshire and Lancashire players make up much of the North team which won the inaugural T20 last summer against the Midlands and South. The North side also plays fixtures against club elevens and their next match is on Sunday June 13th at Arthington CC against Mutineers.

ECAD Golf Day - 3rd September 2021

ECAD are running their first ever Charity Golf Day on Friday 3rd September, to raise funds for Deaf Cricket.

It will take place at Horton Park Golf Club in Epsom, famous for its island hole.

Entry is £60 per person or £240 for a fourball. Places are limited.

Notton win again as Boycott supports Deaf Cricket

ECAD North 154 all out (40 overs) Notton CC 155-7 (31 overs) Scorecard

Guest of honour, Sir Geoffrey Boycott was introduced to the teams before the game and performed the coin toss which came down in favour of Notton who decided to field on a still slightly damp wicket following several weeks of heavy rain.

Openers Chris McElroy and Ed Denton found it hard going against an accurate bowling attack and when Denton was out with the score on 12, it looked like anything over 100 would be a good effort.

McElroy dug in and, despite a very slow start, batted 37 of the 40 overs for 67 anchoring the innings as others came and went cheaply. He was well supported on the way by James O'Connor and towards the end James Dixon chipped in with 33 not out, valuable runs to take the team towards a competitive score.

In reply, Notton started equally cautiously, but the innings changed when Richard Nordon came to the crease, blasting 56 off just 24 balls of clean hitting, particularly in the deep mid wicket region, and took the game away from ECAD.

A flurry of late wickets gave some hope with young Jamie Dillon taking 2-13 and Alexandra Harrison bowling well against the attacking Nordon to finish with 2-25 off her 6 overs.

Deaf Cricket Trial in Bradford Saturday 29th May

On 29th May, the ECAD talent ID coaching team will be heading to Bradford to seek out new cricketers for the ECAD North and ECAD Yorkshire county teams.

The county team currently play one flagship match per year against Lancashire - the Roses Match - while the ECAD North team which sits above that, play around 8 or 9 matches over the summer, mostly on Sundays. There are also indoor matches across the winter months.

In October we are launching a National Deaf Cricket Centre in Birmingham, which will become a hub for weekend training and indoor competition.

At the trial we hope to see cricketers from the age of 10 up to adults who would like to be involved and who are already playing, or have played, some hard ball cricket. Players with a hearing loss in one ear which would require assistance from an aid up to profoundly Deaf cricketers are welcome.

ECAD draw inaugural 1st XI match in the City of London

Honourable Artillery Company 220 all out ECAD 1st XI 107-7 Scorecard

The new ECAD 1st XI team, sponsored by Involve UK, drew their first ever match at the wonderful Honourable Artillery Company's City of London ground.

Losing the toss, ECAD were sent into the field on a flat slow wicket which looked like it was going to be a bowler's graveyard.

The early exchanges appeared to confirm this after Edward Denton picked up opener King lbw for 11. Fellow opener Bax looked confident hitting through the line, including one calm clip for 6 over the shorter leg side boundary.

However the ECAD team dug in and the experience of Mike O'Mahony and captain Jake Oakes steered the innings back in their direction with a flurry of middle order wickets reducing the HAC to 123-7.

Choosing to make sure every player was involved in the game rather than going for the jugular, the ECAD spinners struggled to find the right length on the slow wicket, allowing the HAC to put 92 for the 8th wicket with captain Edwards scoring 50.

Oakes & O'Mahony returned to wrap up the innings in short order as HAC ended 220 all out, Oakes taking 3-27 and two wickets apiece for Denton, O'Mahony and off spinner Jason Talmer.

In reply ECAD struggled with Santimon's late movement and lost early wickets with Grabham, Sweeney, O'Mahony and Lofthouse all falling to the same bowler followed immediately by Umesh Valjee who played on to Parry from the other end, leaving ECAD perilously placed at 44-5. Denton & Macadam fell after a brief revival and at 65-7 ECAD were staring down the barrel (of many guns around the boundary edge too) of defeat.

However, captain Oakes was joined at the crease by off spinner James O'Connor and they confidently batted out the final overs, Oakes scoring 32 not out off 63 balls and O'Connor 21 not out from 74 balls of exemplary blocking.

An amazing occasion for the ECAD team which it is hoped will become an annual fixture.

ECAD North start season at a canter with win over Sefton Park

ECAD North started the Deaf Cricket season with a bang, beating Sefton Park CC in Liverpool by 8 wickets with 18 overs to spare.

Winning the toss and opting to field, ECAD opened the bowling with two fifteen-year-olds, Edward Denton and debutant, Gabe Francis. The home team started well adding 71 for the first wicket in 13 overs before Will Spilsbury was bowled by off-spinner James O’Connor, making his Deaf Cricket comeback after a couple of years.

O’Connor bowled tightly in tandem with leg spinner John Kenward-Nash as ECAD North pulled the innings back under their control. By the time opener Stirling retired on 50 not out, the North team had reduced the run rate to a shade over 4 runs per over at 135-2 in the 36th over.

Denton returned to tie up the innings, taking a wicket in the process, and Sefton Park ended on 176-3 in the 40 overs. Denton ended on 1-20 off 7 overs of tight bowling. O’Connor taking the other two wickets to end on 2-23 from his 8 overs.

In reply, Denton opened the innings with veteran Derek Grabham who was bowled in the 5th over for a brisk 12. Cameron Sweeney came to the crease and brought his usual fireworks with him, moving to 25 in his first 13 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes. Sweeney reached his 50 off 28 balls with his sixth maximum and his next one took ECAD North past 100 on the first ball of the 14th over. He eventually retired on 82 off only 36 balls with 6 fours and 9 sixes, having put on 104 with Denton off less than 10 overs.

Denton was run out just 3 short of his half-century with 9 fours off 44 balls having shortly before hit 20 off one over.

James O’Connor and debutant keeper, Chris McElroy’s 28 run partnership saw ECAD North safely over the line with plenty of overs to spare.

ECAD North open the season this weekend at Sefton Park

Reigning ECAD National Deaf T20 champions, ECAD North open the season of Deaf Cricket at Sefton Park in Liverpool on Sunday.

Naming a team of 13 full of ECAD members, they will bat & field 11 players using the early season opportunity to get everyone involved. ECAD captain, James Dixon, is normally Saturday 1st XI captain at Sefton Park which will no doubt add some spice to the occasion.

There are ECAD debuts for Christopher McElroy and Gabriel Francis and we welcome back James O'Connor after a couple of years absence.

ECAD partners with Panathlon to deliver cricket

Panathlon is set to expand its programme of sporting activity for deaf children by adding cricket to its growing roster of sports.

The charity has formed a partnership with ECAD which will see schools for deaf and hearing-impaired children in Essex and East London enter into cricket competitions in the summer term.

To raise awareness and anticipation of this exciting opportunity, England deaf cricket international James Dixon has been holding Q&As with schools via Zoom during the Covid-19 lockdown, giving pupils the rare opportunity to engage with and be inspired by a deaf sporting role model.

The format of the summer’s cricket activities will depend on Covid-19 restrictions in place at the time:

If pupils are still in school but severe restrictions remain in place, the activity will be ‘virtual’ within individual schools, delivered by staff.

If permitted, James and other England deaf cricket coaches will visit schools and deliver coaching and competition internally.

If the virus has retreated sufficiently, there will be a multi-school cricket festival with eight schools competing in two pools of four.

The forthcoming addition of cricket expands our existing programme for deaf students which already includes swimming, boccia, ten-pin bowling, multi-sports and football.

Panathlon’s Chief Operating Officer, Tony Waymouth, commented: “We are delighted to be able to enhance our offer to deaf schools who engage with our wider deaf programme.

“Through the third UK lockdown it’s been great to have James Dixon (pictured below) and also England women’s rugby international Jodie Ounsley holding online Q&As with schools to give deaf pupils role models who share their disability and have reached the pinnacle of sporting achievement.

“When restrictions allow, we’re looking forward to giving deaf students a new platform to build their skills and scale their own sporting heights alongside their deaf peers.”

ECAD and Panathlon hope the partnership will allow both organisations to tap into a wider audience – particularly ethnically diverse communities – enabling more deaf children to experience inclusive sport, go on to pursue cricket in mainstream settings and even potentially unearth England international cricketers of the future.

Darren Talbot, Chief Executive Officer of ECAD, said: “We’re excited to be working with Panathlon to support the delivery of cricket in deaf schools and schools with HI units as well as delivering competitions.

“ECAD are hoping to spread the word on deaf cricket to a larger audience. Currently we don’t believe most parents are even aware of its existence.

“Our aims are to try to find a way to get the players involved in our deaf cricket pathway and to assist them in their cricketing journey within a mainstream “hearing” environment should they also choose to go down that route.”

ECAD Twenty20 National Deaf Cricket Festival

North v Midlands - , Scorecard

ECAD North kicked off the ECAD T20 Deaf Cricket Festival with a narrow win by 25 runs which looked a lot worse caused by 20 penalty runs for a slow over rate.

North lost opener Cameron Sweeney first ball but Derek Grabham, Edward Denton and James Dixon propelled the North team to 132-6 off their 20 overs. Unfortunately the ECAD Midlands team bowled their overs very slowly with regular field changes taking some time and so 20 penalty runs were added to the North score after a generous enforcement of the rules from the umpires.

Sammey Ahmed bowled his leg spin beautifully to take 3-7 off his 4 overs.

In reply, Midlands' Majid Hussain hit a quickfire 55 but when he was out with the score on 88 it looks like they would fall well short. However, Sakil and Mustafa put together an unbroken partnership of 40 to take their team just short of the finishing line. North v South - , Scorecard ECAD North took home the trophy following a convincing win over ECAD South.

Batting first again, North were propelled to 157-5 thanks to an unbeaten 92 off just 44 balls from Cameron Sweeney, hitting 5 sixes to end a run of first-ball LBWs.

Mike O'Mahony took 2-14 off his 4 overs as the South younger bowlers were no match for the big-hitting Sweeney.

South needed a good start and O'Mahony was caught and bowled off just the second ball of the innings.

Joe Fisher continued his fine form with the bat hitting 45, with support from Jim Sutton 33 not out but 158 was always going to be a tough target.

Kamran Mirza bowled well taking 3-21.

South v Midlands - , Scorecard ECAD Midlands won for the first time this summer with a convincing win over a young ECAD South team.

In a match reduced to 18 overs due to previous games overrunning, South batted first and looked to be in control at 75-1.

However Mike O'Mahony was out for 40 and no-one else managed double figures as the innings cascaded to 90 all out, Ryan Bletchley taking 3-11 off just 2 overs.

In reply Sammey Ahmed and Majid Hussain knocked off most of the runs before retiring to allow others to have a bat and duly completed a 10 wicket victory with overs to spare.

Notton CC v ECAD North

Scorecard

ECAD North went across to the Barnsley/Wakefield area for what was planned to be a 40 overs match against Notton CC.

Unfortunately persistent rain, which brought the players off the field a number of times in the first innings, reduced the match to 30 overs.

Enormous credit must go to the umpires and groundsman for not only allowing the game to go on - the wicket was already damp from heavy overnight rain - but by persisting in regular showers.

The home team were sent into bat and were soon 80-0 off 10 overs thanks to some loose bowling and, eventually 7 dropped catches which probably cost ECAD North the match.

Joe Grove and Ashley Elliot both made unbeaten half-centuries and duly retired as agreed at the start of the match.

John Kenward-Nash once again bowled well taking 3-30 off his 6 overs, able supported by Edward Denton 2-32. 13 year old Jamie Dillon also completed his full allotted 6 overs for 40 runs including bowling at the death. There are high hopes for him in the future.

In reply Derek Grabham and Denton got ECAD off to a good start but couldn't quite match the Notton run rate. Grabham departed for 22 but Denton carried on to a maiden ECAD half-century, retired to complete an excellent match. The future of Deaf Cricket in the North is looking very bright.

Captain Jimmy Dixon smashed a quick 40 but was bowled trying to up the run rate which was fast approaching 15 an hour, too much for the North team.

Notton were excellent hosts and also took the time to raise money for the England Cricket Association for the Deaf Charity. We will be looking forward to a re-match next summer.

Griff and Coton CC v ECAD Midlands

ECAD Midlands travelled to Warwickshire to play against Griff and Coton in Nuneaton for their 3rd friendly game of the season. Griff and Coton batted first and scored 156 for 6 off 35 overs. The play was disrupted on a couple of occasions, early in the innings, due to rain resulting in reducing the overs to 35. A. Clarke batted patiently and kept the score ticking along with the support of the captain M. Cottel. There was a middle order wobble with one batsmen retired hurt before S. Haycock and S. Haycock managed to keep the runs ticking over with 12 and 23 respectively. ECAD Midands displayed good fielding, catching and bowling to maintain the score to 156. A. Clake topped the innings with a fine innings of 56 with Extras being the second highest score of 34. Some good bowling performance from ECAD Midlands with the captain Sammey, M. Hussain and A. Heath all picking up 2 wickets apiece. ECAD Midlands lost 2 early wickets before M. Hussain 62 and Z. Khan 23 put together an partnership of 54 to give hope of chasing the total. After the departure of Z. Khan the lower order were unable to offer support to M. Hussain who was finally caught on the boundary. Some notable bowling performances from Griff and Coton were J. Scullion with 3 wickets for 23 runs off 5 overs and C. Scott polishing off the tail enders with 3 wickets for 0 runs off 1.3 overs. Well done to Griff and Coton for a wonderful game of cricket played in the right spirit of sportsmanship and we look forward to playing them again next season. ECAD Midlands put in a positive performance with plenty of positives to reflect upon and plan for the next game.

Blackheath CC v ECAD South

The England Cricket Association for the Deaf (ECAD) South team travelled into the beautiful south Guildford countryside to play Blackheath on Sunday.

ECAD lost the toss and were put into bat for the first time this season.

Moazzam Rashid opened up with guest 'keeper Will O'Neill, and they put on a solid 38 before Moazzam chopped on. Paul Kenyon, elevated from his normal lower batting position, joined O'Neill and the two consolidated for a few overs before O'Neill was caught.

A heavy downpour took the players off for half an hour but the home team were keen to play and the players returned in light drizzle which continued for some time, the ECAD South team hugely grateful for the efforts to keep the game on especially with some players having made a 2 hour or more journey to the match.

Kenyon continued to play cautiously as wickets fell before he too was out at 74-4. Wickets continued to fall steadily but a rusty 12 not out from Omar Farooq playing his first game for 7 years and cameo of 13 from Hassan Ahmad, a personal best, dragged the team to a competitive 126 all out.

The Blackheath innings started well for ECAD with 3 wickets falling for just 15 runs with some tight bowling from Moazzam and Joe Fisher, who took 2-14 off 5 overs.

At 36-4, ECAD looked like they were in the game but 12 year old opener Rob Greenway held strong scoring 45 before holing out to a full toss with just 6 needed for victory. Greenway looks to be an exceptional talent and one to look out for in the future.

Blackheath won the game by 5 wickets with 10 overs to spare.

The ECAD South team spirit is a pleasure to see, particularly given they have played together so little. With 6 players under 17, there is a very bright future ahead for this group.

Nottinghamshire Deaf open the season with a T20 Friendly

This was a 20/20 friendly against Flintham who play in Division E in preparation for our first cup game in two weeks time against West Bridgfordians.

Captain Daryl Slater won the toss and elected to field first on what looked like an excellent wicket for May. Full credit must go to the Flintham groundsman for preparing the wicket and the outfield which was immaculate.

Flintham batted first and finished on 144 for 5 off 20 overs. There was some tight bowling from Thomas Platt and Ian Penman but the fielding needs to improve.

NDCC batted for 19.2 overs scoring 120 all out. There was good contributions from Oliver Wilcox, (21) Ravi Hundal, (27) and Daryl Slater who top scored with 33 runs. other contributions came from Jan Cresswell (10) and Jordan Slater (14). It's worth mentioning that James Barnes made his debut last night and got a golden duck. Richard Johnson, Harry Platt and Ian Penman also got ducks.

MOM was Daryl Slater for his all round performance looking sharp in the field, batting and bowling. An excellent performance for the new captain.

Many thanks to Flintham CC for being the opposition and providing an excellent pitch. Also many thanks to Les Townend and David Morris for umpiring.

The serious stuff starts this Saturday 5th May v Great Dalby at home, 1pm start. This will be our first game in Division L.

ECAD Academy retain their National Deaf Indoor title

The young ECAD Academy team won this year’s spring ECAD Indoor Deaf cricket tournament in Derby to retain their title in a very close competition.

Lancashire looked the early favourites with two comfortable wins over Nottinghamshire and Birmingham BID before a surprise defeat to a weaker than usual Surrey team.

Meanwhile ECAD Academy were growing in confidence and getting better game by game until their group match against Lancashire where the Red Rose county bounced back from their Surrey defeat with a convincing win to guarantee them first place and a final berth.

Surrey’s second win over Birmingham BID was enough to put them into 3rd place and a semi-final play-off against Lancashire but Lancashire’s strength in the depth was too much and an ECAD Academy v Lancashire final repeat was set up.

Meanwhile Nottinghamshire beat Birmingham BID in an excellent 4th/5th play-off match.

In the final, ECAD Academy batted first and scored 32, by no means a strong score. However, in reply Lancashire lost regular wickets against ECAD’s strong bowling line up and ended up 9 runs short in an excellent final.

Player of the tournament was ECAD Academy captain Nathan Caddell, with team mate Isaac Harrison young player.

ECAD will be running a second indoor tournament on 21st October at the same venue.
